WEINSTEIN AND THE #ME TOO WOMEN.


Harvey Weinstein was (and is still) one of the most popular men in Hollywood. An accomplished and a prolific producer he was that whole industry greatly respected him. His ingenuity at his work earned him accolades including the Oscars for his work,'Shakespeare in Love'.



Like most great men, Harvey Weinstein had his own weaknesses. For over the years, it was an open secret that Harvey was a sexual predator who over the decades used his position and close working relationship with actresses to sexually assault, harass and even outrightly rape them. After years of investigation by the New York Times, many women known as the 'Silence Breakers' came out boldly to accuse the almighty Harvey of inappropriate sexual behaviours, gestures and  rape. This prompted a lot of other top listed actresses to come forward with similar accusation against the movie mogul. So far, more than 50 women had accused him. Harvey was stripped of many awards he won and was sacked by the board of his own company.


This action emboldened a lot of other women to come out with similar accusation against the untouchable men in the media, tech, sport, politics, etc. This is what gave rise to the #Me Too campaign.


The campaign was aimed at naming and shaming sex predators and if possible bring them to justice. Like Harvey, big names like Kevin Spacey, Roger Ailes, Roy Moore, Matt Lauer, Billy Bush, Bill O'Reilly, Mark Halperin, Mark Oreskes, David Sweeney, Gleen Thush etc, have been disgraced and shamed in their respective field. A dramatic week saw 3 lawmakers in the United States Legislature; Congressman John Conyers(D), Congressman Trent Franks(R) and Senator Al Franken all resign as a result of sexual harassment charges. Calls have been made for the US President Donald Trump to step down because of his alleged history of sexual harassment which he vehemently denied severally.


These women that had the courage to come out and speak up are worth commending and not condemning. It is noteworthy that the prestigious Times Magazine deemed it fit to award them (the silence breakers) the Person of the Year Award for the impact they have made this year.
